When Daniel Miller wakes up one morning, something has gone terribly wrong. The power is out. The phones are dead. The house is silent. The street is shrouded in fog. Both his partner and their adopted daughter are missing. So are their neighbors. And so is everyone else in the world. Daniel Miller is the last person left on Earth... or is he?

From award-winning, best-selling horror writer Brian Keene comes this quiet, chilling, supernatural short tale (15,000 words).

Alone eBook Brian Keene

Alone by Brian Keene is not the usual style of writing I've come to expect from the author, but, man, he nailed it. Keene kept me guessing. I had my suspicions, but the odd detail here and there continued to throw me off.

Even when Keene drops the bomb on readers, I still didn't know what to expect in the end. I felt Daniel's fear throughout the story. Nothing like uncertainty to to turn alone time into a nightmare.

Alone eBook Brian Keene Reviews

This was a great short piece. My first read from Keene, but certainly not the last. To be fair, I did figure out the twist pretty early, but the skill with which it was written kept pulling me along.

I especially liked the little extra at the end, explaining where the story came from. Those little insights into the writing process I always find so interesting.

Also, chapter 4. Chapter 4 hit like a ton of bricks.
I never knew what was going on. You outdid the "movie" ten fold. The end blew me away. As Brian said, do not skip to the end. You are the artist
"Alone" by Brian Keene is a short story about a man who wakes up and finds himself alone in the world.
Brian Keene is a great author and the story is written well, but it is quite predictable. Even so, it makes an enjoyable read. He writes beautifully and creates great characters.
I've been a Keene fan for years, and while this story was different from most everything he writes I enjoyed the heck out of it. I did know early into it what was going on, but it didn't lessen the reading of it. Lovely ending. Yep, I'd recommend this story and author.
This author was recommened to me by a friend and I am happy to say that it was a good recommendation. This was a pretty good short story! It is about a man that wakes up in the morning and his family and neighbors have disappeared. I read it in one sitting - could not put it down - the ending was a surprise and I wasn't excepting it - definitely a five star read!
I stopped reading Keene's writing in 2008 as he seemed to be interested only in writing in writing tributes to earlier horror writers and a lot of his work felt bloated, like he was trying to reach a certain word count. Since I was going to be in the hospital for a few days I thought I'd give entombed a try, but saw this on and since it was a tenth of the price and too short to have filler gravitated hear. Loved the plot and even though I got where it was going fairly early on it didn't really matter because the pacing and general direction of the story were good. If you're looking for something to keep you entertained for a couple hours this is def a good read.
I like Mr. Keene. In my opinion he is a good writer, however, I feel when it comes to his short fiction it is just average. Alone is no different.

Alone tells the story of a man named Dan. One day he wakes up to everyone gone. His husband, their daughter, the neighbors, everyone. Also, a mysterious fog surrounds his and a few other houses. Dan must figure out how he ended up in this strange new, but familiar world and why.

From the beginning I knew the twist. I had hoped I was wrong but no luck. However, that doesn't make it a bad story. Just average. Other than the twist the only other problem I had was with Dan's interaction with the environment around him, mostly with the pen, considering how other items act in his world.

In the end, just average.
