Amazing Job yet again!!! Can't wait for #3
If you like Brandon Sanderson, you will most likely enjoy how David Ekrut builds his worlds and characters. The new setting in the familiar world is a fresh take, which is really nice with all the over used fantasy tropes. Its nice to have something fun and interesting to read. Looking forward to the next one!!
To be fair to the author, if this was book one in a new series, I would likely rate it 4 stars. But it isn't. I realize now that it is an interlude in the Elwin Escari Chronicles. Elwin is no where to be found in this book. Imagine watching the second Jason Bourne movie (but without any Jason Bourne). I avoid epic fantasy with multiple points of view, which is one reason why I started this series, since the title (and indeed book one) implied a singular main protagonist in Elwin Escari, and the first book was not listed in the epic category (whereas this one is). I think the author now has his work cut out for him, as the protagonist in this book (Jax) seems more competent and interesting than Elwin (the protagonist the series is named after). I would have liked to see something in the book description informing the reader that Elwin would not be in this book and that this was a side story. I worry now that the author will pull a Martin or Jordan and add so many new character POV subplots that I lose all interest. Any more interludes and I will move on to another series.
I love epic fantasy! I could not put this book down. I am in love with the point of view characters, the magic system and the over all story line. It kept me engaged and invested. I enjoyed the writing style, world building and twists, which start from the beginning. I love that there are several strong female characters; and they have much more depth than the typical 'here for/with the boy' female characters. It is suitable for adults and youth. I am so excited that we get to see more of these characters in Chronicles (read Taming The Elements, now!). I can't wait for the next book. Write faster (please).
I received this second book in this series today. I can't wait for the third. David Ekrut is an awesome writer who brings his characters to life! This one, like the first, just can't be put down!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this interlude to the main Elwin series. It is a thrilling adventure, full of exciting plot twists, that keeps you on your toes until the very end. The fantasy world of Arinth is developed more in this story as we venture in the desert nation of Kalicodon—learning of the intriguing and strict culture and customs along the way. We also meet new and unusual characters, that undoubtedly will play major roles as Ekrut continues to develop the people in his fantasy universe.
I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next in the series!
